Since the Legislature established the Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund in 1995, TIF has awarded more than 7,000 grants for Internet access, computers, technology training, and electronic resources to benefit all Texans.

What has TIF done in 7 years? Think back to 1995. Few schools could afford high-speed Internet access. Libraries relied mainly on books. Distance learning was not widely available in higher education. Today, most schools, libraries, and colleges have high-speed access to rich electronic resources. Many rural communities have access to the same electronic resources available in large cities.  Telemedicine now saves physicians and patients time and money.

So, what has TIF done for your community? Click on the map of Texas.  Pick out your county and see the grants to your community. TIF has helped change the technological face of Texas, but technology is still changing, so there is still much more to be done -- and like highways, telecommunications infrastructure requires constant maintenance and upgrades.

What more must TIF do? Imagine every single school, library, university, and hospital with high speed Internet access. Imagine more instruction and learning resources available to your children at school and at home. Imagine faster and closer healthcare services. Imagine getting a degree from a university hundreds of miles away from where you live. Imagine a network in your community with one stop electronic access to information and services for your family or your business.

But without TIF this vision may disappear. TIF was set up as a 10-year program. The TIF Board expects to make its last grants by August 2004 and shut down in 2005. To keep TIF alive, the people of Texas must ask their legislators to continue TIF.
